Caliente!

Caliente!  In Spanish it means hot.  The word brings memories of a great spicy dish or a sense of passion.  It evokes strong emotion, intense desire and unbridled fire.  In an interior design plan it makes a bold statement, as with Benjamin Moore’s color of the year, Caliente, but this season it is showing up on the fashion runway as well.

As a stylist with cabi, I recently attended our Spring fashion show, where I was able to view the new collection, which we are calling “Inspired by Passion.”  It is a beautifully curated collection and passionate inspiration is seen throughout the three trends of the season: Dapper Darling (think Annie Hall), Heavy Petal (floral themes) and High Contrast (black and white).  We bring the passion with a fiery red we are calling Hibiscus.  As I reflect on the beautiful, fiery shades of Hibiscus that permeate the collection, I am struck at the synergy between interior design and fashion, as evidenced by Benjamin Moore’s color of the year.

Red is a power color and many of my clients opt to wear it when making a presentation at work.  The color just oozes confidence.  You can add a pop of red against a more neutral outfit, as shown above left, with a piece like the Trumpet Cardi.  The bell sleeve on this piece is reminiscent of a flower petal, a nod to the Heavy Petal trend.  This type of piece plays as hard as it works and would be equally great on the weekend with a crop jean and a statement shoe. A subtle pop of red in the sleeveless Rose Top under the Valentina suit also makes for a beautiful infusion of red.

Red is a lively spirit and brings the fun.  Lunching with girlfriends, throw on a pop of red with the lightweight pullover, like the Cartwheel Pullover, on the model on the right. Stripes, another huge trend seen all over the runway, and one that pattern mixes beautifully with florals, is an easy trend to incorporate into your closet for work or play.

Another easy way to add a pop of red is to use a beautiful floral scarf with touches of that “caliente” red or add beautiful sandal such as the Tip Toe sandal, shown above to the right.  One of the advantages of using red in your wardrobe, is that it works as a neutral.  Pair it with anything in your closet, from denim in white, blue or black or dress it up with navy, black or even our newest trouser, the Charlie, in bronze linen, shown far right.

For those of you that insist “I can’t wear RED”!  Try a fun small flower to clip to your shirt, on your purse or even in your hair!  As shown on the model on the left with our beautiful Tiered Top, Crossroads Jacket and Peyton Trouser.

This season, be bold, be daring, (be caliente)!  Wear the red!
