Wonder what goes on behind the scenes of a beautifully designed space?

It all starts with a single idea—a feeling, an art piece, or a cherished object. But turning that spark of inspiration into a cohesive, stunning reality requires a thoughtful and detailed process. For interior designers, this journey is all about creating a custom-curated design palette, a bespoke blueprint of colors, textures, and materials that tells a story.

Jewel Toned Interiors’ process is a true "team scheme"—a collaboration that brings together diverse talents to refine a singular vision. While one designer may take the lead, the entire team contributes to the final palette, ensuring every detail is considered from multiple perspectives.

The first and most critical step is the Client consultation. This isn't just about discussing a Client's favorite colors; it’s about diving deep to understand their lifestyle, personality, and goals for the space. We ask questions like:

  • What feeling do you want this room to evoke?
  • What are the functional needs of the space?
  • Are there any existing pieces—like art, furniture, or a rug—that we need to work around?

This phase is about listening and observing, gathering clues that will inform the entire design journey. It provides the foundation for the design decisions. With a clear understanding of the Client's vision, we move on to creating a mood board. This is where the abstract ideas start to take visual form. A mood board is more than a collage of images; it’s a carefully composed narrative. At Jewel Toned Interiors, the lead designer presents an initial concept, and a lively, creative exchange begins.

One designer might suggest a richer fabric to add a layer of luxury, while another might propose a bolder paint color to make a statement. We gather images that represent the desired aesthetic, from architectural details to fashion and textiles. We select paint swatches, fabric samples, and material chips that align with the established mood. This collaborative tool is invaluable for ensuring we're on the same page as the Client. It’s a way of saying, "Is this the feeling you're looking for?" before we commit to specific selections.

Once the mood board is approved, we translate the visual story into concrete selections. This is the heart of palette curation, and the team's combined expertise is essential. We pinpoint the exact paint colors, ensuring they work together harmoniously and under different lighting conditions. We choose fabrics for upholstery, window treatments, and pillows, considering not just color and pattern but also texture and durability. We select finishes for hardware, lighting, and plumbing fixtures that complement the overall scheme.

The goal is to build a palette where every element supports the next, creating a layered and sophisticated result that feels both intentional and effortless. This collaborative process ensures a well-rounded and deeply considered design.

A curated palette is a complex tapestry of choices, so how do you present it effectively? We don’t just show a Client a stack of samples. We create a physical presentation tray of materials that displays all the selections together in a cohesive manner. This might include large paint swatches, generous fabric samples, and actual wood, tile, or stone pieces, and metal accents.

This allows the Client to see and feel the design, helping them visualize how the elements will interact in their space. We can see on their faces that the vision is coming to life!  We walk them through each choice, explaining the "why" behind every selection and how it contributes to their overall vision. This moment is all about building trust and excitement for the transformation ahead.

The final stage is turning the approved palette into a tangible reality. This involves meticulous project management—placing orders, scheduling tradespeople, and overseeing the installation process. The curated palette serves as the ultimate guide, ensuring that every piece of the puzzle, from the painter's brushstroke to the placement of a throw pillow, stays true to the original design intent.

The journey from a whispered idea to a finished room is a testament to the power of a well-executed design palette. It’s the difference between a decorated space and one that feels truly designed and uniquely yours.
